Where can I drink good sake in Japan?

A pretty common question, but one that’s not easily answered! See, the thing is, is that everyone has their own preferences. Just like not everyone drinks their coffee the same way, or their whiskey on the rocks, not everyone likes the same kind of sake.

An easier question is “Where can I drink sake?”. We’ll answer that first, and then talk about the “good sake”. Simply find a place that looks like this!

Welcoming and cozy, this is the kind of place you want to go into. It won’t be the spot where you’ll have an English-speaking bartender explaining what you’re drinking, but it’s going to be local, high-quality and reasonably priced.

The best type of sake bar is one that has an all-you-can-drink plan on offer, and has over 50 different types of sake available to drink. That way you can sample different kinds, and go all-in on the types that you like. Low risk, high reward!

In terms of what you’re drinking? Well, that entirely depends. Sake’s taste depends on how it’s made. As you may know, Japanese sake is made of rice. Specifically, fermented rice.

Before the fermentation process, the rice is prepared in a variety of different ways. The most expensive sake is made from a highly polished rice. It takes more effort and it’s higher quality – giving it a higher price.

Some sake has distilled alcohol added to the fermented rice, bloating it out a bit more. Some sake is sweeter than others, some sake is smoother than others.
